In 1831 a band of vigilantes trekked to Patch Hollow from Wallingford. Their intent was to tar and feather Rolon Wheeler, resident of the Hollow, for reports that he had commited an indiscretion with his sister-in-law. Wheeler knew they were coming and waited in his dusky lair. When the vigilantes broke in, Rolon stabbed one, Isaac Osborne, to death. The rest fled. In the ensuing trial all of the vigilantes were fined and Wheeler was aquitted. The settlement has since been abandoned.
